Improving Inquiry-based Learning in Mathematics and Statistics

Inquiry based learning has been a hot trend in teaching for the past few years, with NCEA incorporating inquiry based learning into their strategic intentions for 2016-2020. However, as a teaching philosophy, inquiry based learning presents a unique set of challenges for mathematics and statistics.

Inquiry based classrooms lean towards interactive learning, with discourse allowing the verbalisation, analysis and critique of the reasoning process. For us as teachers, this increases the complexity of the classroom. Many of us have been taught in traditional teacher led classrooms, where the inquiry-based method requires the teacher to take on the role of a facilitator.

This conference aims to develop our understanding of how inquiry based learning can be included in mathematics and statistics classrooms.

• How can teachers challenge the traditional method to increase engagement and successful outcomes?
• How does inquiry based learning lead to successful learning within the university space?
• How can we address the challenges faced by minority and marginalised student demographics who interact with the inquiry methodology in various unique ways?
• How does technology support this learning methodology?
