Teacher Symposium : Seeing Their World - 4 Dec 2015 9:00 till 3:30

The School of Mathematics and Statistics of Victoria University offers an opportunity for professional development for Teachers and all people working with Mathematics and Statistics students.

This symposium for secondary and tertiary teachers of mathematics and statistics will explore the different elements and challenges of the transition from college to university. We will provide:

• an insight into the different worlds of experience of college and first-year university students;
• the medical science of brain development in adolescence and how this affects NCEA results;
• as well as engage in two workshops to develop hands-on ideas on improving teaching strategies to cater for the needs of adolescence.

Please join us for a day of discussion, interaction and inspiration to start a conversation on how we can work better together to achieve an easier transition from college to university for our students.

12pm - 1.30pm	1) “What skills do students need to succeed at Uni” (Facilitated by Kathryn Berkett) this workshop will build on the keynote address by exploring different ideas on what students need to transition to university and how this can be achieved.		AM102
12pm - 1.30pm	2) ‘Helping students to learn’- from a university perspective (Facilitated by Dr. Amanda Gilbert, CAD). Amanda will discuss scaffolding learning, what the teacher does compared to what the students actually do.		AM104

2pm - 3pm	NZQA Presentation - "Strategic Behaviour" How well are students doing in Maths and Statistics and and trends in NCEA level 3. This presentation will show what the statistics say about these courses.	Eldon Paki	AM102 & AM104

Carparking

We have 5 carparks available however these will be allocated to attendees travelling at least 50km or more from Victoria University or if you have a special need such as a disability/mobility purposes.
