Abstract
Complex manifolds admitting Kaehler-Einstein metrics are elusive objects: relatively abundant, but not always easy to recognise. Restricting throughout to the instructive special case of complex hypersurfaces, I will outline the history of the search for such complex manifolds; describe some examples whose status is uncertain; and mention some conjectural methods which could resolve them.
