I will present an overview of the idea of analysing shape and shape variation using the diffeomorphism group. This will cover some motivation for studying shape variation, including a brief digression into historical motivations, and why it requires data analysis techniques. I will introduce the geometric ideas underpinning our approach, and then show some of the approaches that we use to describe shape change under uncertainty.
